The Oracle of Apollo, most famously the Delphic Oracle, was a prophetic priestess known as the Pythia who served as the mouthpiece for the Greek god Apollo at the sanctuary of Delphi. Located on Mount Parnassus, Delphi was considered the center of the ancient world, and the Pythia delivered ambiguous prophecies to kings, generals, and citizens who consulted her on matters of war, politics, and personal life.
The oracle originally belonged to the earth goddess Gaia(Also Mt. of Transfiguration) before Apollo claimed the site by slaying the serpent Python. The Pythia, typically a woman over 50, entered a trance state believed to be divine possession by Apollo, often induced by inhaling vapors from a chasm in the temple's adyton or chewing laurel leaves. Her pronouncements were interpreted by priests and recorded in verse, influencing major historical events such as the founding of colonies and the outcomes of wars.
Other significant oracles of Apollo existed, such as the one at Didyma, which operated near a sacred spring and was historically linked to the Branchid family, but the Delphic oracle remained the most prestigious and influential throughout the classical Greek period. The Delphic oracle's power waned after the Roman conquest and it reportedly delivered its last prophecy around 393 CE before being closed by Emperor Theodosius I
